Summer is Winter is Summer

I write this from an admittedly mild Dutch winter, watching #sydfest posts enviously from afar, looking back on recent works made in the Aussie heat whilst shivering from cold, and at the same time preparing to travel to possibly the world's hottest festival city, Adelaide.

Recently happened - I scored two new shows:

Company 2, Trent Arkwelder and I premiered 'Perched' at Woodford Folk Festival. Designed and conceived by Chelsea and Dave from Company 2, Perched fully utilised the main pond area at Woodford, with high-wire acts, hand balancing, and stunning visual elements that took the audience through dusk into night. Trent is wonderful musicians whose previous work includes the show 'Cantina'. He and I worked together on the score, which saw us playing about 20 instruments between us over the course of the show. Steve Swayne has a great gallery of shots documenting the show over at flickr, you can preview a couple below.

Prior to Perched Company 2 and the Uncanny Carnival Band launched my new score for 'Scotch & Soda' in a season at the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane. Local reviewer Xanthe Coward said, "Company 2 and The Uncanny Carnival Band are some of the most genuine and generous entertainers I’ve seen up close. Their hearts and souls shine bright in this show."

You can hear some of the new music vibes on our brand new show recording:

Coming up shortly:

Scotch & Soda will be appearing in a limited season at the Adelaide Fringe Festival febraury 12-28th, as will the Vintage Quartestra performing our vintage-ised cartoon themes. Sydney-siders can catch the Splendid Six at Swing Dance Sydney on February 5th.

Scotch & Soda commission

In November 2015 Company 2 and Grand Moustache are re-launching Scotch & Soda,  an exploration of jazz, improvisation and circus theatre, with a wholly new score. I'm very happy to have been asked to compose the new score, and our new musical ensemble, The Uncanny Carnival Band features great players out of Sydney: Matt Ottignon and Chris O'Dea on saxes, Eden Ottignon on bass and Evan Mannell on the drums.

Splendid Six CD available in May

Last year I bundled the Amsterdam based Splendid Six into Electric Monkey studios to make our first little recording. The CDs will be available from May 2015, through me or Yum Yum Tree Records. It's a swinging little thing, with 7 old tunes in great arrangements, and 2 brand newies from yours truly. There's some wicked playing by everyone involved, especially guitarist Simon Verwaart and trumpeter Coos Zwagerman. More Soon.

Woodford Folk Festival with Cope St Parade

I'm up at the glorious Woodford Folk Festival, in Queensland, Australia, with my old mates The Cope Steet Parade, filling in on tuba. It's my first time playing a solid tuba role in a Jazz band I think, so heaps of fun. Plus it's nice and hot, when it's not raining. See here Justin Fermino enjoying a cold beer in the heat. The Cope Street Parade play Woodford Folk Festival Tues 30th, Wed 31st Decemebr and Thurs 1st January
